Journey to Faster Payments
The Federal Reserve System published Strategies for Improvement of the U.S. Payment System on January 26, 2015, “In Pursuit of a Better Payment System, that is safe, efficient and broadly accessible.” In April 2015, the Federal Reserve System’s Faster Payments Task Force was formed in a historic effort and laid out a final plan in July 2017 with a “vision for secure, ubiquitous, faster payments by 2020.”
These efforts led to the formation of the Governance Framework Formation Team (GFFT) and to the development and implementation of a “faster payments governance framework, inclusive of all stakeholders, to facilitate ubiquity of faster payments in the United States.”
In the spring of 2018 GFFT established the U.S. Faster Payments Council (FPC). The FPC is a new membership organization established so Americans can safely and securely pay anyone, anywhere, at any time and with near-immediate funds availability.
