Introduction
The long-anticipated Swift cutover for ISO 20022 is officially complete. This shift marks a significant milestone in global financial messaging and ushers in a new era of richer, more structured data across the payments ecosystem.
As of November 2025, the coexistence period for Swift’s CBPR+ program has ended for payment messages. This means that legacy Swift payment instructions in the MT103, MT200, MT202, and MT205 formats must be updated to their data-rich counter parts pacs.002, pacs.004, pacs.008, and pacs.009.
For those who met the deadline, operations continue smoothly and now leverage the benefits of the enriched ISO 20022 data. However, institutions that were unable to meet the deadline are continuing their operations with Swift’s contingency support, which includes:
- Swift’s In-flow translation service (convert incoming MX to MT messages)
- Swift’s Contingency Processing (convert outgoing MT to MX messages, ensuring that receivers would receive only MX after November 2025)
- Automatic charges on these services beginning January 2026
While the contingency period provides a temporary safety net, it introduces risks, delays, and additional costs that will begin in the new year. The conversation has shifted from whether or not organizations will eventually migrate, to how quickly they can eliminate their dependency on Swift’s contingency plan and take financial continuity into their own hands. If your organization still needs to complete the migration or requires some additional assistance, Axletree experts can help. Below are some examples of the value-added services to support ISO migrations that we have been able to provide for many of our clients:
1. Message Header Creation with Symmetree by Axletree®
Swift requires all MX messages to be enveloped by a technical header also known as the SwiftNet or InterAct header. Many back-office systems do not hold the capability to create this header in-house—this is where Symmetree by Axletree® steps in. Symmetree can be deployed to add unique headers for each message according to the exact requirements, before they are sent across the Swift network. Symmetree can also remove the headers from incoming messages before they reach the recipient organization, so that our clients may receive and process all their messages without any additional configuration or overhead.
2. Message Translation Result Notification with Symmetree by Axletree®
Swift’s In-flow translation service converts MX messages into MT format, but it is not a fool-proof solution. Often, translations are incomplete with truncated fields or replaced characters, and sometimes they fail entirely.
For several of our clients, Symmetree has been deployed to review these results and send email notifications to clients after each MX message is processed, including details on how successful the translation was. This way, clients can easily confirm the translation result for each message to ensure that there are no errors, delays, or failures in their critical messaging. This direct email notification also makes the information easier to access, as compared to relying on translation comments within multiformat messages or on the Swift dashboard.
3. Integration with Sanctions Screening with Symmetree by Axletree®
With the introduction of new data-rich messages, it is important for organizations to ensure that all their MX messages are screened for compliance as they are received, prior to being processed.
Many of our clients have utilized Symmetree to integrate with Sanctions Screening platforms in accordance with their workflows. This allows them to see the complete processing of messages in a single dashboard, which includes statuses from Swift, screening results, and back-office applications.
4. API Integration Services
Many clients adopt API connectivity for richer MX messages and added services, but lack the infrastructure to manage it themselves. As a Service Bureau, Axletree can securely handle the API credentials and connectivity on behalf of our clients to ease their API management. And with Symmetree, integration is seamless, wherein we can connect to any system and manage API requests and responses effortlessly. With some of our clients, Symmetree has also been integrated to parse only the required information from an API response and send this information to our clients in their desired, proprietary format.
5. Axletree’s Advisory Services
If an organization needs assistance to complete their migration or tie up loose ends, Axletree’s Swift and integration experts are ready to assist with providing detailed feedback or clarifying confusion at any part of the process.
For example, one client of ours had internal resources in place to complete their migration, but they needed additional training on creating MX messages and identifying errors with message rejections on the Swift dashboard. With the additional training and support from our experts, our client was able to complete their transition with both an improved knowledge base and complete peace of mind.
Conclusion
The ISO 20022 migration is no longer just about maximizing the advantages of the advanced format and avoiding additional costs—it’s a matter of compliance. Our experts are equipped to help your organization to any degree required, from providing knowledge and guidance to handling your entire migration from start to finish, so you can focus on what’s most important for your business.
